Enyimba of Aba arrived in Pretoria day before yesterday desperately needing a win against the Mamelodi Sundowns today in hopes of keeping their ACL dream alive.
The Nigerian champion though totally outplaying Zamalek in Port Harcourt last week lost 0-1 to the Egyptian juggernaut while Mamelodi Sundowns not only thumped ES Setif behind two spectacular goals but also got them expelled from the competition due their unruly fans. Sadly the expulsion also voided the game and leaves the South Africans with no points just like the Peoples Elephant.
The 19 Aba players as well as the management all are raring to go and know that even a draw may not be enough to see them through, especially now with one team less to face in the round robin format.
The players are Afelokhai, Ocheje, Akas, Ojo, Uwadiegwu, Udoji, Anyanwu, Thankgod, Kester, Ibenegbu, Aliyu, Mfon, Abalogu, Osadiaye, Anaezemba, Etor, Pyagbara, Onyekachi, and Onuigbo.
Meanwhile coach of “ the Brazilians” Pitso Mosimane has assured his fans that he will have his team ready. Both Soumahoro Bangaly and Teko Modise that had the flu and are back in action. Mosimane also refused to read anything into the Zamalek win in Port Harcourt saying that pitch was very bad and the game was a coin toss.
“We have learnt that in the Champions League, you must never concede at home, especially in knockout stages. That’s the lesson we learnt rather than complaining that we lost three points,” Mosimane also shared.
When asked about the Nigerians who have not had the greatest of runs in the league, winning only one of their last five games, and sitting on position nine on the log and have won only nine of their 20 league games Mosimane said that was inconsequential adding “they have got good attack. You know Nigerians. They are gladiators,”
Chief Anyansi chairman of Enyimba was just as optimistic about his teams chances saying “We have tremendous experience at this level and we will approach the game with confidence in our ability to take the maximum three points,”. However the Nigerians know that in order to succeed they must try and coral above others the Zimbabwean Khama Billiat who has been nothing short of brilliant and who carved up the ES Setif defence all day long.
The game will be live on SuperSport at 18.30 CAT or 17.30 WAT. Weather at game time is supposed to be ideal with a zero chance of precipitation
